The News Media Coalition (NMC) today (September 24th, 2026) welcomed a District of Columbia judge’s recognition of the importance of news reporters, photographers and video journalists being able carry out their vital work without artificial barriers.

Denial of access for journalists, rules preventing distribution of news material, intimidation leading to self-censorship – and public figures who would rather embrace uncritical influencers than engage with independent newsgatherers.

In the wake of the White House’s decision barring journalists from CNN, MS NOW, and POLITICO and the confiscation of their credentials, the National Press Photographers Association condemns this retaliation against independent reporting. NPPA stands with the journalists and news organizations targeted by the ban.

A global evidence review commissioned by UNESCO, DW Akademie and the International Fund for Public Interest Media finds that falling press freedom tracks with weaker economic growth, and that investment in reporting returns far more than it costs.

The European Alliance of News Agencies (EANA) has become an affiliate member of the SPUR Coalition.
