The European Alliance of News Agencies (EANA) has become an affiliate member of the SPUR Coalition.
EANA brings together 33 news agencies across Europe. The SPUR Coalition is a non-profit industry body set up by organisations that invest in original journalism. It develops shared standards for reporting how news content is used by generative AI applications, and works on the technical and commercial infrastructure that allows publishers and AI developers to transact transparently. Its founding members include the Associated Press, the BBC, the Financial Times, Sky News, Guardian Media Group and Telegraph Media Group. The Associated Press and Telegraph Media Group are NMC members.
The European Alliance of News Agencies (EANA), which brings together 33 news agencies across Europe, has now become an affiliate member of the coalition. The affiliation gives EANA agencies access to SPUR membership at a reduced rate, and a place in the standard-setting work on content licensing and usage transparency.
Alexandru Giboi, EANA Secretary General, described the move as an extension of the alliance’s work in defending news agencies and the journalism they produce.
News agencies are a clear example of primary source journalism. How that work is identified, valued and paid for in AI systems is now one of the central questions for the future of quality news.
