NMC welcomes efforts to strike a balance in combating online piracy while protecting media freedom, but the collateral blocking of news outlets, human rights platforms, and essential infrastructure demonstrates why enforcement mechanisms must be calibrated with precision. Without technical safeguards and transparency, anti-piracy measures risk becoming tools that disrupt the open internet infrastructure on which primary source journalism and newsroom operations depends.

For the News Media Coalition, the debate mattered because it repeatedly returned to the ground where Primary Source Journalism lives: access to events and institutions, the terms attached to accreditation, the concentration of rights, and the protection of the people who do the reporting. Those themes surfaced again and again, across political groups and national delegations.

At a moment when artificial intelligence can generate text, images and 'feeds' that look at a glance, like real journalism, the executive editor of one of the world's most respected news agencies has issued a clear and urgent challenge to her industry: get closer, not further away.
