The News Bargaining Incentive reached the Australian House of Representatives after NMC’s member AAP successfully argued that Primary Source Journalism is vital to the information ecosystem. Chief Executive Emma Cowdroy welcomed a guaranteed five per cent share of any money the scheme raises.

NMC welcomes efforts to strike a balance in combating online piracy while protecting media freedom, but the collateral blocking of news outlets, human rights platforms, and essential infrastructure demonstrates why enforcement mechanisms must be calibrated with precision. Without technical safeguards and transparency, anti-piracy measures risk becoming tools that disrupt the open internet infrastructure on which primary source journalism and newsroom operations depends.

For the News Media Coalition, the debate mattered because it repeatedly returned to the ground where Primary Source Journalism lives: access to events and institutions, the terms attached to accreditation, the concentration of rights, and the protection of the people who do the reporting. Those themes surfaced again and again, across political groups and national delegations.

EPA Images, the European Pressphoto Agency and an NMC member, has opened applications for the second edition of its Advanced Programme in International News Photography. The 12-month course, run by the EPA Academy, begins on 15 October 2026 at the agency's headquarters in Frankfurt.
