Membership of the News Media Coalition (NMC) can be granted by the NMC Board if a news organisation applying for membership satisfies the specific criteria set out below. Membership also requires compliance with the Membership Agreement.

Organisations are eligible to apply to be a Member if:
(1) A substantial part of its activity is as a news agency or a news publisher; and
(2) It has a dedicated professional editorial team which creates AND distributes and/or creates AND publishes original journalistic news, editorial and related content concerning matters of public interest; and
(3) It has processes in place to evaluate contractual rules (including Accreditation Terms, News Access Regulations, etc) governing the creation and use of editorial, including news, material; and
(4) Its operations distinguish between editorial and commercial use of material.

OR:

(5) It is a trade organisation operating in the news media sector in which each and all of its members:
(a) Are primarily a news agency or a news publisher; and
(b) Have a dedicated professional editorial team which creates AND distributes and/or creates AND publishes original journalistic news, editorial and related content concerning matters of public interest; and
(6) It supports the NMC in promoting the importance of its members:
(a) having arrangements in place to evaluate contractual rules (including Accreditation Terms, News Access Regulations, etc) governing the creation and use of editorial, including, news material
(b) distinguishing between editorial and commercial use of such material

Once accepted for membership, a Member must pay its Member fees in accordance with the Membership Agreement.
