Workers representatives have urged the UK government to strengthen copyright and AI regulations to safeguard creative professionals.
As the government’s consultation on Copyright and Artificial Intelligence concludes, the Trades Union Congress (TUC) warns that without decisive action, AI’s rapid expansion could leave creative workers vulnerable to exploitation.
Key proposals from the TUC include greater transparency on AI training data, an opt-in system to protect copyrighted works, and fair remuneration for creators. The union also advocates for an independent regulator to oversee AI’s impact on the workforce and society.
TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak acknowledged AI’s potential but stressed that current UK legislation is outdated and failing to protect one of the nation’s most valuable industries. He called on the government to introduce stronger protections to ensure fair pay and safeguard the sector’s future.
As the consultation closed, Science, Innovation, and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle signalled a willingness to address the creative sector’s concerns.
