Nikon unveils AI sports camera tech

Nikon has announced two new automated camera systems to be used during sports events.

Polycam Player is designed to help with both the broadcasters and the teams themselves analyse the movements of the players on the field by automatically tracks the players from multiple perspectives.

Of more interest to broadcasters is the Polycam Chat system which can take over the jobs of camera operators by using face and limb recognition software to track presenters and guests in a studio. Nikon claims it will simplify small-scale TV production and free up staff for other roles.

The systems have been developed by MRMC, a robotics and motion control systems manufacturer, which Nikon bought in 2016.
