McAfee, the cyber-security firm responsible for next months Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, has confirmed that there was an attempt to steal sensitive data from sporting organisations.
“The majority of these organisations had some association with the Olympics, either in providing infrastructure or in a supporting role,” the security firm said.
Malware-infected emails were sent in a likely attempt to obtain passwords and financial data. McAfee said the hackers were attempting to convince their targets that the emails had been sent by South Korea’s National Counter-Terrorism Center.
McAfee reiterated warnings from the University of California that Olympics related attacks are likely in future.
