The president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, and the Council of Europe Secretary, General Thorbjørn Jagland, met in Strasbourg yesterday (10 January) in order to discuss the promotion of human rights in sports.
FIFA and the Council of Europe agreed to start working on a Memorandum of Understanding which should set out in detail the areas of cooperation between the two organisations. The aim is to have it ready for signature by the end of 2018.
The NMC is keen to ensure that this Memorandum of Understanding incorporates language which has been agreed by the European Council, UNESCO and MINEPs gathering of sports ministers recognising the role of the news media in holding sport, including its administration, to account including in areas of poor governance, corruption and match-fixing.
