EPA Images, the European Pressphoto Agency and an NMC member, has opened applications for the second edition of its Advanced Programme in International News Photography. The 12-month course, run by the EPA Academy, begins on 15 October 2026 at the agency’s headquarters in Frankfurt.
The programme is aimed at emerging photographers who want to specialise in news photography. Launched in 2025, it covers the technical, journalistic and creative skills needed to produce news images, alongside training in photo editing. Teaching is in English.
Students take ten on-site modules that combine block seminars with practical assignments, online sessions and two months of on-the-job training. Places are limited to ten participants to keep the teaching close and personal, and those who complete the course receive an EPA Images Certificate. The first cohort brought together ten photographers from Germany, the Netherlands and other countries.
“This programme offers a unique opportunity to learn directly from professionals working at the forefront of global news coverage while preparing participants for the realities and demands of today’s visual news industry,” said Vicente Poveda, Chief Commercial Officer at EPA Images.
Training of this kind speaks to something the NMC cares about: the next generation of newsgatherers, and the news photographers among them. A strong environment for journalism depends not only on the freedom to report but on the people coming into the profession and the support they receive as they start out. Initiatives like the EPA Academy help build that pipeline.
EPA Images was established in 1984 by seven European news agencies and made its service available worldwide in 2003, adding a global video service in 2014. Its daily production draws on eight member agencies across Europe: ANA-MPA, ANP, ANSA, EFE, KEYSTONE-SDA, LUSA, MIT and PAP.
