Copyright Protection Key To Growth As AI Policy Develops

Creative Industry Launches New Effort On AI – As Government Launches Consultation

A new coalition representing rights holders across the creative industries, including publishers, authors, artists, music businesses, unions, specialist interest publications, and photographers, has urged the government to prioritise copyright protection as it shapes policy for generative AI (GAI).

The coalition, Creative Rights in AI Coalition launched on 16 December 2024 with a collaborative vision for ensuring that both the creative and tech sectors can thrive in the digital age. At the heart of the launch are three key principles for GAI policy, backed by a statement from coalition members. These principles aim to establish a robust copyright framework, promote transparency, and drive sustainable growth and innovation across industries.

The AI coalition states: “Protecting copyright and building a dynamic licensing market for the use of creative content in building generative AI (GAI) isn’t just a question of fairness: it’s the only way that both sectors will flourish and grow.

The coalition’s message is underscored by newly released polling data from Reset Tech and YouGov, which highlights overwhelming public support for transparency and fair remuneration in AI model training. According to the surveys:

  • 72% of respondents believe that AI companies should pay royalties to creators of text, audio, and video used to train AI models.
  • 80% of respondents agree that AI companies should publicly disclose the information their models have been trained on.

Three Principles for AI Policy

The Creative Rights in AI Coalition’s framework for AI policy focuses on:

  1. A Dynamic Licensing Market – Ensuring creators are fairly compensated for the use of their works in AI development while fostering innovation.
  2. Control and Transparency – Content creators must have control over their work, including transparency around how AI models use creative content.
  3. Driving Growth and Innovation – Establishing a copyright framework that supports sustainable development across both the creative and tech sectors.

A Positive Vision for Collaboration

Their statement articulates a shared goal of supporting innovation while safeguarding creators’ rights:

“We support the government’s mission for long-term, secure growth in the creative and tech sectors. … Ours is a positive vision, a vision of collaboration between the creative industries and GAI developers, where we can all flourish in the online marketplace.”

The coalition, spearheaded by the News Media Association of publishers in the UK, argues that fair copyright protections are not a barrier to AI innovation but a necessary foundation for mutual growth. By respecting creators’ rights and fostering transparency, the UK can set a global precedent for a fair, ethical, and thriving AI-powered future.
